the Rhine Journey as we approach the opening of T.1.1 on the shores of the Rhine at Gibichung Hall. I take the entire Rhine Journey to be Wagner’s metaphor for the collective history of art which, since the renaissance, had gradually been freeing itself from its religious affiliation and becoming more secular, branching out into the world of men without the protection or disadvantages of faith. This process culminated, according to Wagner’s own theory of history, in the Wagnerian music-drama, which will be figuratively represented in Siegfried’s narrative of the story of his life, explaining how he came to understand the meaning of Woodbirdsong, in T.3.2.
