T.P.1, was blighted after Wotan broke off its most sacred branch to make his spear of the law (the law which according to Wagner stifles the free movement of life), that very spear which will effectively bring about Siegmund’s death shortly:

Sieglinde: (#67 on steerhorns?: starting up and listening) (#64 vari?) Hark! The horns – do you hear their call? The furious bray rings forth all around; yonder it yells from forest and shire (:#64 vari). (#60 chromatic vari; #65 on steerhorns?:) Hunding has woken from heavy sleep (:#60 chromatic vari; :#65 on steerhorns?); kinsmen and hounds he calls together; soundly harried, the pack is howling and baying wildly heavenwards at wedlock’s broken vow! (staring ahead of her as if demented) Where are you, Siegmund? Can I still see you? (#40 or 64?:) Ardently cherished, light-bringing brother (:#40 or 64?)! (#64 loose vari:) Let your star-bright eye shine upon me again (:#64 loose vari) and shun not the kiss of a fallen woman! (She has thrown herself, sobbing, on his breast; she then starts up again in fear: #86?:; #67?:) Hark! O hark! That is Hunding’s horn (:#86?; #67?)! (#81?:) His pack is approaching, mightily armed! No sword can resist the hounds’ seething horde: cast it off, Siegmund (:#81?)! Siegmund – where are you? [[ #86 inverted: ]] Ha! There! I can see you – terrible sight! Scenting flesh, the dogs bare their fangs (:#86 inverted); they pay no heed to your noble mien. Their firm-gripping teeth tear at your feet – you fall – the sword is shivered in shards: (#57) (#86 inverted?:) the ash-tree topples – the trunk is riven (:#86 inverted?)! (…) (She sinks senseless into Siegmund’s arms.)

Siegmund: Sister! Beloved! (He listens to her breathing and convinces himself that she is still alive. #25 or #40 alternating with #64 on bass clarinet: He lets her sink down with him so that, as he himself sinks into a sitting position, her head rests on his lap. They both remain in this position until the end of the following scene. Long silence, during which Siegmund bends over Sieglinde with tender care and presses a long kiss upon her brow.)
